Client Testimonials

We began surveying clients about their pets’ recovery process who underwent our QLF™ surgery. Read some of their experiences at different points in the patients’ recovery journey.

“I am an Orthopedic surgeon outside of Boston who has seen the evolution over the last 35 years of cruciate surgery in Humans. From Cast Immobilization to Osteotomy type realignments to finally a more physiologic replacement, I have seen it all. Finally, the approach in humans meets the physiologic load need and because of that people are getting back to high level sports rapidly. After searching for a similar approach in dogs, I found it at the Canine Cruciate Center of New England. Dr. Murtha has developed a more physiologic dynamic approach to fixing this difficult problem.

My dog Dakota is now 5 months post-op, and you could never tell she ever had an injury or surgery. Not only is the surgical approach to this vexing problem expertly done at the Canine Cruciate Center, but the entire staff are first class. They are welcoming, supportive and were there for me and Dakota every step of the way. For all that, I say in the loudest voice possible, THANK YOU ALL.”

“I am a veterinarian with 30 years’ experience. Additionally, growing up on a dairy farm and serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer inspired a philosophy where problems were an opportunity waiting for a solution. These “problems” often become an impetus for creative solutions and fresh perspectives. So, when my own beloved retriever was potentially a candidate for cruciate surgery, I remained open minded while researching all the available surgical options. When I first spoke to Dr. Murtha, I was honestly somewhat skeptical, but Dr. Murtha responded to my concerns clearly and honestly. He took the time to share his own journey and how he developed the QLF™ surgical alternative. During our first conversation, he stated that he was not Board Certified, but had been perfecting and refining this innovative cruciate repair procedure for over 30 years.

On our first consultation at NAHAH/Canine Cruciate Center, Covid protocols were still in place and pet owners remained outside. My husband used this opportunity to canvas the parking lot for feedback. What we found was intriguing. I was most interested in larger breed dogs who had received the QLF™ cruciate repair surgery. When questioned, these owners were pleased with the outcome. Based on my clinical observations, I assumed that the dogs I witnessed were in for follow-up from months before. The reality was these dogs were 2 weeks post-op.

The journey with my dog was less straightforward than originally suspected, but eventually I was faced with the decision to select a surgery. As both a veterinarian and a pet owner, I thoughtfully and carefully considered all the surgical options. I ultimately selected the option that I felt would provide not only the best potential for a functioning knee, but also (and most importantly), the best potential for quality of life.

It has been over 6 months since the QLF™ surgery. There have been zero surgical or other complications associated with this procedure. Honestly, my greatest concern has been complying with the post-surgical PT protocols. My dog wanted to start running within 2-3 weeks of the surgery and I needed to restrict his activity to allow for healing and prevent re-injury. Thanks to Dr. Murtha’s QLF™ surgery, my almost 12-year-old beloved retriever cross is happily back on the hiking trails with a fully functional and stable surgically repaired knee.

As a veterinarian I have worked in several clinical veterinary practices. My observations and interactions with the staff at NAHAH/Canine Cruciate Center have been noteworthy in the dedication, compassion and professionalism displayed. The follow-up to the cruciate surgery has been exemplary. I received consistent calls and messages checking in on how all was progressing.

I am exceedingly grateful to Dr. Murtha. I admire his determination and perseverance in developing and refining this procedure. He exemplifies what we as students were extolled on our first day in veterinary school… to “stay amazed” and remain lifelong learners seeking professional growth. Dr. Murtha and his staff are compassionate, dedicated, and knowledgeable professionals. They have given my family the joy of having our “pup” back running alongside us again. I genuinely hope that Dr. Murtha continues to provide this innovative surgical option.”

“I read the material on their website, and it seemed to make a great deal of sense. There would have been a time when I viewed canine ACL surgery as being pretty much the same, with any qualified Orthopedic surgeon, but experience (some bad), has taught me otherwise. With this situation, I did my due diligence and decided Dr. Murtha were the right choice and the QLF™ procedure was Bogie’s best option.

Having been a State Police officer for more than twenty years and then having done another 20 years investigating corporate, white-collar crime, I tend to make quick assessments of people and environments. I had a very good feeling about the people at Canine Cruciate Center. It is difficult (though not impossible) to fake sincerity, but they all seemed to genuinely care about the giant Rottweiler. The people at Canine Cruciate Center called almost every day to check on Bogie’s condition and that was both comforting and reassuring.

The first week saw an amazing transmission. Bogie went from looking like a fighter who was taking a standing eight count, to the inquisitive and playful pup he had always been. The first two weeks after surgery continued to show progress every day. The people at NAHAH seemed genuinely pleased to see Bogie and he appeared equally happy to see them again. To Annette and me it seemed a small miracle how much had transpired in just two weeks, but NAHAH seemed almost matter of fact as to Bogie’s progress. Clearly, they had seen these types of results before.

Unfortunately, I have developed somewhat of an expertise in sizing up surgeons and physicians. My “gut” is usually on the mark in assessing doctors. I liked Dr. Murtha. He was personable, but clearly no-nonsense and his results said it all. I am not in the habit of reviewing anything. Based on our experience, the manner in which we and Bogie were treated and QLF™ surgical results, I would recommend Dr. Murtha without hesitation or reservation.”

My labradoodle had her first ACL repair done in 2019 and the other leg repaired in 2020 so we were pretty much out of our normal activity routine for a few years which was tough on everyone but especially Mya who couldn't join in on the fun! We couldn't be happier with the entire experience, from the amazing staff to her incredible results. She's back to hiking with us and tags along most everywhere she's allowed to join. I highly recommend Dr. Murtha and the entire staff at the Canine Cruciate Center of New Hampshire!

Our experience with the Canine Cruciate Center, Dr. Murtha & Staff was 10/10! If I could give a higher rating, I would. Our 2 year old dog, Heisenberg, was diagnosed by our at-home Vet in NJ with Bilateral CCL Tears. Our whole world flipped upside down with this diagnosis - from the research, the fears, the unknowns, all the questions, etc. We originally went to our vet for the X-ray under anesthesia because he sits and stands slowly, gets on the couch slowly, and his bones literally click (think of an older dog moving around). We were checking him for past-trauma (he was a street dog in Aruba) or hip dysplasia, and were certainly not expecting this diagnosis.I posted in a FB group for suggestions/support, and the Cruciate Center was recommended to us. We called as soon as we could, asked so many questions and requested a call from Dr. Murtha, who called us within a week or so. This man, who on his "free" time between patients, talked with me and my husband for about 20 minutes, for no charge. We ran out of time on the call, and he told us he would call back when he could, and he did again, about an hour later, for another 20 minutes or so. He is incredibly detailed, thorough, honest and eases your mind because he knows CCL Tears inside and out - no pun intended. We made the decision to travel to North Andover (about 7 hours for us) to have Dr. Murtha re-do the X-Ray under Anesthesia, which is also called an Orthopedic Evaluation under sedation (OEUS). This is what he recommended to us on the phone, to have another one done by an Ortho vet who specializes in CCLs.We are SO happy that we scheduled this and made the road-trip with our two crazy dogs, because our vet misdiagnosed him! Dr. Murtha called us that day after Heisenberg woke up and it turned out to be bilateral hip dysplasia, and literally nothing wrong with his CCLs/Stifle Joints. He sent out his X-Rays to a board certified radiologist to give a second opinion, but he was right on the money, because the radiologist said the same exact thing. If we would've jumped the gun and booked a CCL surgery at home (because that's what our vet wanted us to do), we would've put Heisenberg through 6 months of unnecessary surgeries/trauma/healing, spent thousands of dollars, and experienced incredible stress while navigating all of that. The fact that Dr. Murtha does a Ortho Eval under Sedation prior to booking the surgery is a MUST - this was the thing that changed the game for us.And now, we will need to do annual Ortho Evals under Anesthesia for his Hip Dysplasia, and we may make this an annual family road trip! Just to give Heisenberg the care he needs, and to give us the peace of mind from Dr. Murtha and his Staff.Thank you so much!

Our 5 year old Alaskan Malamute suffered a Bi-lateral ACL tear to her hind legs in September of 2021. I could not find a vet to correct this injury until February of 2022. I was referred to N.A.H.A.H. by a family member who recently had their dog undergo ACL surgery and were quite pleased with the outcome. We contacted N.A.H.A.H. and we're seen immediately with a scheduled surgery date of December 2021. Dr Murtha and his staff are exceptional at offering immediate care and concern following our dog's surgery with their follow up phone calls and texts to check on our dog's recovery and progress. Our dog is doing great just 2 months post surgery. Job well done by Dr Murtha. THANK YOU N.A.H.A.H. and staff. 5 STARS.

In late April of 2021 Lola, our Leavitt Bulldog (10 years old), under went QLF surgery to address cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injury. After following the recovery protocol Lola has recovered completely. She has regained all of her strength and is just as active as she was prior to the CCL injury. The surgery went well and her recovery was fine. The biggest challenge was minimizing her activity during recovery as it was obvious she was feeling better and more confident in her movement (a proof of the success of the surgery). During the recovery the office was in routine contact with us to check on Lola's progress and always there for any questions. We very grateful for the professionalism shown and the fantastic outcome from the surgery. We strongly would recommend the Canine Cruciate Center of New England and Dr. Murtha to anyone with a dog in need of this procedure.

Last May, our 1 year old shepherd mix Indigo was suddenly limping and we were at a loss for what to do. I spent hours reading about TPLO surgeries and horror stories of plates having to be removed, infections, etc. We felt so helpless. After many sleepless nights of researching and lunch breaks spent calling different animal hospitals in the state of Massachusetts, I landed on the Canine Cruciate Center website. I was intrigued by Dr. Murtha's QLF procedure, and gave them a call. The staff at the Canine Cruciate Center were able to get Indigo an evaluation appointment quickly, and Dr. Murtha was able to diagnose Indigo with a likely CCL tear. After thoroughly explaining the CCL procedure, the recovery process, and the benefits, we scheduled Indigo's QLF for later that month. On the day of Indigo's surgery we were provided multiple updates on her progress, and we were able to take her home the same day. We were given thorough instructions on what the recovery process was going to look like over the next days, weeks and several months. The incredible staff at the Canine Cruciate center called up multiple times a week to check in on Indigo during her initial recovery. They encouraged us to reach out with any questions or concerns, and it was extremely comforting - and helpful - for us to have such wonderful support. While the recovery process has been long and difficult at times (carrying an 80 lb dog up and down stairs was a learning curve at first!) my husband and I have followed every direction in the recovery process and are thrilled to have our sweet, energetic puppy running around the back yard again. People are shocked when we tell them that she had a fully ruptured CCL just 5 months ago.We cannot say enough good things about Dr. Murtha and the Canine Cruciate Center. Our Indigo is back to her daily hour long walks, playing in the back yard and zoomie-ing around the house like before. If you were like us and are weary of the TPLO process - give Dr. Murtha a call. We are eternally grateful. Thank you for helping our Indigo !(PS. The picture of Indigo jumping in the leaves was just 5 months after her QLF!!!)

“Hattie is able to do all her favorite things with no hesitation or discomfort. I would say she is as comfortable as could be. She functions very well. The only thing that she won’t try is a very steep staircase. Normal staircases are no issue. Having had two different kinds of surgical repairs (TPLO and Dr. TM’ procedure) on her ACL I found she recovered stronger and quicker with the NAHAH approach and did not take a huge financial hit. We could not be more pleased with the results and love how much her quality of life has improved.” – Michael Young, Westford, MA

Patient: Bailey | Age: 13 years old | Recovery: 1 year post-op

“Bailey is doing great! No limping, a walk, runs, has trouble getting up or going up the stairs but does it (hesitates a bit, and then go). Some stiffness no pain—might be due to age. Does not have pain when moving, just getting up, seems to be related to age. I have full confidence that my dog was in the best hands possible and that his repair will continue to serve him well. Thank you for helping my dog!” – Renee Donnolly, Plaistow, NH

Patient: Osiris | Age: 3 years old | Recovery: 1 year post-op

“Level of function: 100% improvement. Better moral. Her comfort level 100% better, fewer rests, more pep in his step! The staff was truly amazing. Being there, and reassuring everything was going to be ok, answered all my questions, made sure Osiris was healing ok, everything. If I lived closer, NAHAH would be my #1 go to for veterinary services. Thank you guys so much! You are truly the best. Si’s is living 1000% better and I can tell he thanks us every day. Thank you for all your support, and making my best buddy feel better.” – Jenna Johnson, Nashua, NH

Patient: Argo Buttercup | Age: 9 years old | Recovery: 1 year post-op

“His comfort level: Good but has a hard time sitting (stiff) can no longer sit straight. AB’s functionality: Very good! Can run, play with other dogs, and jump small obstacles. After 1st surgery, I followed post-op recovery instructions very strictly. After 2nd surgery I did in general, let the dog increase his activity level based on how he felt and he recovered much faster after the 2nd surgery. With the 2nd surgery I also didn’t constrain him to a pen; he had access to 2 rooms as usual (less change/stress for him). I will recommend NAHAH/MVSRC to friends and family!” – Sophie Lowery, Charlestown, MA

Patient: Marley | Age: 9 years old | Recovery: 1 year post-op

“Marley is very comfortable, almost back to normal, he seems to struggle with stairs and after long hikes he gets sore. He’s fully functional, happy per usual and full of energy. I did not know what to expect and I did not know if he was going to be able to be the same but thankfully he is back almost to his full self. I think for the results and recovery time the cost of this procedure was reasonable. It is an expensive surgery none the less but I understand it’s not an easy procedure but it does hurt your pocket. I can’t thank you all enough for the care and love given to Marley. I appreciate all your efforts and I am beyond grateful I did my research and found you guys and Dr. Murtha. He is incredible and my dog’s life is more important than I could ever express and he is still his happy self! Thank you.” – Andrea Baez, Brighton, MA

Patient: Lunar | Age: 5 years old | Recovery: 1 year post-op

Patient: Rafael | Age: 7 years old | Recovery: 1 year post-op

“Rafael is doing excellent! He had surgery on both knees within a year.” – Raylene Wentz, Haverhill, MA

Patient: Fig | Age: 5 years old | Recovery: 1 year post-op

“At times Fig shows some discomfort after activity (like a mile hike or playing ball for a few throws) but overall he is doing very well!” – Julie Forrest, Merrimack, NH

Patient: Sophie | Age: 5 years old | Recovery: 1 year post-op

“At first, Sophie did not put any weight on the leg unless she was walking. Now she puts 80% of weight on it even while just standing. There is a bit of a pointy spot under the skin. She walks, runs, swims, and jumps just like she did before the tear. I have been supplementing her with Cosequin DS Plus TID.” – Amy Lu, Andover, MA

Patient: Homer | Age: 2 years old | Recovery: 1 year post-op

“Thanks for everything!!” – Carol Linsdey, Leominster, MA

Patient: Delgado | Age: 6 years old | Recovery: 2 years post-op

“This was the most amazing surgery! He had both legs repaired at once and he showed no signs of pain. I followed all Dr. Murtha’s post op instructions exactly and recovered beautifully! Delgado was previously misdiagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy, a neurological condition. Once we decided to see Dr. Murtha, without hesitation he knew Delgado had thorn both ACLs. Almost 2 years after surgery, he is doing remarkably well! He can outrun all of his playmates; he plays harder than any of them, 100% normal again or even better than before! Dr. Murtha’s procedure was life changing.” – Janet Anderson, Union Grove, AL

Patient: Tala | Age: 4 years old | Recovery: 2 years post-op

“She is comfortable and has full function of her repaired leg. I am 100% satisfied with the results of her surgery. Before her surgery, I doubted that she would ever regain full use of her leg or even run as fast as she used to. However, within a couple of months she was completely back to normal.” – Chiara Savi, North Andover, MA

Patient: Abby | Age: 10 years old | Recovery: 2 years post-op

“We are extremely grateful on the outcome. Abby had so much energy before and struggled while we tried to figure out the next move. Only thing I wish is that I found you sooner. Abby does not seem to have any pain outside of weather changes that can cause him to move a bit slow getting up until it is stretched out. Level of function, she acts and does everything I expect a 10-year-old dog to do.” – Sean Pedersen, Revere, MA

Patient: Gunny | Age: 10 years old | Recovery: 2 years post-op

“Gunny is very active and goes for an off leash walk almost every day. He is slowing down a bit and turning white in the face from old age but his leg is working great! Thanks so much for a great job!” – Brian Martin, Merrimack, NH

Patient: Buddy | Age: 10 years old | Recovery: 2 years post-op

“He had surgery on both legs at the same time! Amazing! Dr. Murtha was the only one willing to do both legs at the same time. The only thing I wish could have been done was to have Buddy stay overnight that first night. It was a bit scary not having his back legs to use and monitoring his pain level and post anesthesia recovery. Buddy received outstanding care! Dr. Murtha is the best and the staff is excellent!” – Marcia Panico, Danvers, MA

Patient: Bella | Age: 9 years old | Recovery: 2 years post-op

“That Donna at the front desk is fantastic! Dr. Murtha’s procedure is amazing, you’d never know my dog had any kind of injury, ever! Thank you all!” – Kopacz, Rhonda, Lowell, MA

Patient: Fonzarelli | Age: 12 years old | Recovery: 2 years post-op

“He is doing better than I ever could have expected! He is living a full, happy and healthy life!! Many thanks.” – Norma Tatone, Methuen, MA

Patient: Mata | Age: 9 years old | Recovery: 3 years post-op

“Mata does not appear to be in any discomfort; she uses both of her legs and is able to walk and run as well as she did prior to surgery. She did injure her other leg a year after, also repaired by Dr. Murtha. We are very happy with the results of Mata’s surgery. She is able to walk and run which is more than we expected. Her level of activity is back to pre-tear.” – Meaghan Grinell, Haverhill, MA

Patient: Sharik | Age: 8 years old | Recovery: 3 years post-op

“The dog is doing GREAT! My wife takes him for a 3 mile run every day and he has no issues at all.” – Andrei Zharov, Lexington, MA

Patient: Stella | Age: 6 years old | Recovery: 3 years post-op

“Both legs repaired within the same year. Doing awesome!” – Stephen Bogursky, Bedford, NH

Patient: Beau | Age: 6 years old | Recovery: 2 years post-op

“I have not hesitated to recommend NAHAH for surgery, to friends, our primary care vet, and neighbors. I also loved the staff and their friendly caring. We are moving to VT (dogs love it there) but would drive back here if surgery needed. Beau’s comfort level is good, and his repaired leg’s functionality is back to normal. Took almost 2 years to get full function, we worked him too far. The receptionist we dealt with was OUTSTANDING, caring, personable, great follow-up, still remember her and how nice she was! I have recommended this practice and procedure.” – Ann Mccann, Groveland, MA

Patient: Ollie | Age: 7 years old | Recovery: 3 years post-op

“The motion of hopping up the stairs is good therapy when he healed after surgery. I carried Ollie up the stairs for a long time and as a result, his had weakness in the leg. As soon as I brought him back, the doctors told me to let him hop up the stairs, he started walking normally! THANK YOU SO MUCH!” – Janet Collet, Newburyport, MA

Patient: Mazie | Age: 6 years old | Recovery: 4 years post-op

Patient: Truman | Age: 14 years old | Recovery: 4 yeras post-op

“No limping—Truman’s comfort level has been so very good 3 years post surgery. His level of function is very good, stairs are still not a problem and he is 13 years old. I’ve been very satisfied with the care that Truman has received at NAHAH. The staff is always friendly and professional. The doctors don’t push extra services and are transparent about the costs and procedures. Pricing is competitive. Dr. Murtha takes his time explaining options; I never felt rushed or pressured to make a decision. I’ve recommended NAHAH to others with confidence.” – Sandra & John Lheron, North Andover, MA

Patient: Kage | Age: 13 years old | Recovery: 4 years post-op

“She is doing well. Sometimes has a little limp but only when having to do many stairs (my home office is on the 3rd floor and if she goes up & down 3-4 times during a day, she can sometimes limp a little if we take a longer walk but at her age, I would say she is doing well. I am her new adopted owner and she has lost quite a bit of weight 40-45 lbs nowadays and it seems easier for her to get around. Her previous owner who was very pleased with the result. Doing well post surgery!” – Rebecca Balogh, Haverhill, MA

Patient: Duke | Age: 9years old | Recovery: 5 years post-op

“I would recommend Dr. Murtha and this procedure very highly. I couldn’t be more pleased!” – V. Tamburello, Methuen, MA

Patient: Marley | Age: 11 years old | Recovery: 5 years post-op

“His function is very good for a 10 year old golden. He wants to do more than he should. He can do stairs; we do limit his distance walking, and no jumping. I remembered being shocked when I saw the leg area post surgery. I wasn’t prepared for the bruising; I think I kept calling to make sure it was normal. And seeing the staples was scary. But very happy with the method used and entire procedure. The recommendation to do water therapy was huge! It made a major contribution to his recovery and helped him get muscle and strength back. I always recommend NAHAH to my friends and even strangers!!” – Shely Kochonski, North Andover, MA
